Students in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) classroom take ownership of their learning by wondering, exploring, learning, sharing, reflecting, and taking actions in and beyond the classroom. The aim of the PYP programme is to develop internationally minded people who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

Amity Global School Gurgaon is an authorised International Baccalaureate® Primary Years Programme (PYP) school. Our students have the opportunity to explore their passions, engage with real world problems and are challenged in their thinking.

What is the IB PYP?

Amity Global School, Gurgaon is an authorized school for IB Primary Years Programme of International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), which focuses on the development of the whole child: academic, social, physical and emotional. These characteristics are outlined in the IB Learner Profile as expressed in the overall aims of the programme, which is to encourage young people to become inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, balanced and reflective.

The programme challenges students to think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning as they explore local and global issues and opportunities in real-life contexts. IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)has identified six areas of knowledge called transdisciplinary themes, that are of lasting significance for students in PYP schools anywhere in the world in the Programme of Inquiry. They are:

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Sharing the planet

PYP units of inquiry enable students to incorporate perspectives from different subject areas (science, social studies, language, mathematics, physical education, arts (music, dance, visual arts, drama) to develop understandings of concepts.

Assessment in an IB Primary Years Programme school is to help students develop the elements of learning: the understanding of concepts, the acquisition of knowledge, the mastering of skills and the decision to take action. The prime objective of assessment in the PYP is to provide feedback on the learning process to grow and develop. Assessments enhance learning and provide opportunities for students to reflect on what they know, understand and can do.

How will my child learn?

Inquiry-based learning is the leading pedagogical approach of the Primary Years Programme (PYP); it recognises students as being actively involved in their own learning and as taking responsibility for that learning. Through inquiry, students not only acquire a wealth of knowledge, but also learn how to learn. Amity Global School puts a strong emphasis on connecting learning with real-life experience through field trips, guest speakers, and supporting each other as well as the community around us. Inquiry-based teaching and learning helps students take action by using what they have learned.

POI 2023-24

Six transdisciplinary units provide students with the opportunity to build an understanding of themselves, their wider community, and the world. Through the Units, students enhance their subject-specific knowledge and skills in relation to the themes represented by the units.

Seven key concepts, often expressed as questions, help students to explore overarching themes and identify patterns within and across subjects. The concepts are the following:

  • Form - What is it like?
  • Function - How does it work?
  • Causation - Why is it as it is?
  • Change - How is it transforming?
  • Connection - How is it linked to other things?
  • Perspective – What are the points of view?
  • Responsibility – What are our obligations?

Learning is an active process. To help students in this process, students apply the strategies and techniques that comprise thinking, research, communication, social, and self-management skills. These are known as the Approaches to Learning.

At the heart of taking action is a belief that each person sees him or herself as an agent for change. By taking thoughtful individual and collective action, students exercise their personal agency by making responsible choices and reflecting on their impact.
